Who is the Lily of the Valleys?

I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys. - Song of Solomon 2:1.

Who is the Lily of the Valleys?
This is a wonderful flower, but this flower is also known as Our Lady%26#039;s tears since, according to Christian legend, the tears Mary shed at the cross turned to Lilies of the Valley. According to another legend, Lilies of the Valley also sprang from the blood of St. George during his battle with the dragon. Other names include May Lily, May Bells, Lily Constancy, Ladder-to-Heaven, Male Lily and Muguet.

Traditionally, Lily of the Valley is sold in the streets of France on May 1. Lily of the Valley became the national flower of Finland in 1982. The Norwegian municipality Lunner has a Lily of the Valley in its coat-of-arms. It is the official flower of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, Kappa Sigma fraternity, Delta Omicron fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority, and Alpha Phi sorority.

The name %26quot;Lily of the Valley%26quot; is also used in some English translations of the Bible in Song of Songs 2:1, although whether the Hebrew word %26quot;shoshana%26quot; (usually denoting a rose) originally used there refers to this species or not is uncertain. The meaning of this flower is %26quot;You will find Happiness.%26quot; This is the Song od Songs 2:1 :1 I am a rose of Sharon, A lily of the valleys.

2:2 As a lily among thorns, So is my love among the daughters.

2:3 As the apple-tree among the trees of the forest, So is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, And his fruit was sweet to my taste.

2:4 He brought me to the banqueting-house, And his banner over me was love.

2:5 Stregthen+ me with raisins, refresh me with apples; For I am sick from love.

2:6 His left hand [is] under my head, And his right hand embraces me.

2:7 I adjure you+, O daughters of Jerusalem, By the roes, or by the hinds of the field, That you+ do not stir up, nor awake [my] love, Until he pleases.

2:8 The voice of my beloved! Look, he comes, Leaping on the mountains, Skipping on the hills.

2:9 My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: Look, he stands behind our wall; He looks in at the windows; He glances through the lattice.

2:10 My beloved spoke, and said to me, Rise up, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.

2:11 For, look, the winter is past; The rain is over and gone;

2:12 The flowers appear on the earth; The time of the singing [of birds] has come, And the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land;

2:13 The fig-tree ripens her green figs, And the vines are in blossom; They give forth their fragrance. Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.

2:14 O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, In the covert of the steep place, Let me see your countenance, Let me hear your voice; For sweet is your voice, and your countenance is comely.

2:15 Take for us the foxes, the little foxes, That spoil the vineyards; For our vineyards are in blossom.

2:16 My beloved is mine, and I am his: He shepherds [his flock] among the lilies.

2:17 Until the day is cool, and the shadows flee away, Turn, my beloved, and be like a roe or a young hart On the mountains of Bether. You can also listen to it http://read.updated.org/bible/So/2/1?ope...

Are Lillies of the Valley very popular with girls? My girlfriend's birth-flower is the Lily of the Valley.

We%26#039;re all different, of course; but personally I love them... they%26#039;re so beautifully fragrant.

I usually include them (when they%26#039;re available) in some of the flower arrangements that I buy for my home.

Are Lillies of the Valley very popular with girls? My girlfriend%26#039;s birth-flower is the Lily of the Valley.
my mother had a long string of them on the north side of her home and my wife has grown them for years our grandaughter loves them too :)
Reply:I would think so, they are such a delicate flower, I wander if anyone carries them, alot of people have never seen a Lily of the Valley flower
Reply:Lily of the Valley is very delicate and grows in the shade. It has a very sweet, kind of strong smell. I think they are really pretty. If you are planning on getting some for her, maybe you could find out some information and tie that into how you feel about her.

Name some perfumes that consists of jasmine and lily of the valley?

Elizabeth Arden%26#039;s Red Door fragrance, a flowery blend of red rose, violet, jasmine, lily of the valley, and orchid + a touch of honey. It%26#039;s a wonderfully, sexy, alluring, seductive perfume. Just remember a little dab will do you. The key spots to put perfume - the inside of one wrist - then lightly brush it against the other wrist, then the right wrist against the inside of the left elbow, and the left wrist against the inside of the right elbow. Then a light spray to your finger tips on one hand - a dot dab behind each ear lobe. (Sometimes I%26#039;ll do the wrist and inside of the elbow thing then lightly brush my wrists through my hair.)

If you want to find a list of perfumes containing the jasmine, got to www.ask.com and type in %26quot;Perfumes containing jasmine%26quot;... then do it typing in %26quot;Perfumes containing lily of the valley%26quot;. It%26#039;ll give you lots of options to click on and read about. But I used Red Door for years and it%26#039;s a delightful combination...just remember a little dab will do you. Sometimes we have a tendency to overdo because our %26quot;smeller%26quot; grows more accustom to the fragrance over time and we can%26#039;t smell it as readily as those around us. Happy perfume shopping!

I%26#039;ve been thinking of planting some. I love the smell of the tiny flower. And can I buy it in seed form or do I need the root? I%26#039;m not a gardener just love the flower.

When is the best month to plant lily of the valley.?
It%26#039;s usually best to plant lily-of-the-valley in the spring. Normally, they are sold in bulb form, which will give better results than seed. This is especially true in the first year.

Has anyone been able to grow lily of the valley in Adelaide?

Hey Dubgrl,

Let me preface this by saying I don%26#039;t live there. However, Lilly of the Valley is my Wife%26#039;s favorite plant. It grows in the US to Zone 8. It likes it colder than that, and mostly shade. Our zone goes down to 20 Degrees F in the winter. The following is extracted from Wikipedia (then I will sumarize what I think):

The Australia Continent, though surrounded by ocean, is drier than Europe or North America. Australia numbers its climate zones differently, but this system can be translated into the North American systems with minimal effort. Plant hardiness refers to survivability of the conditions of a particular location, including heat tolerance, soil moisture, humidity and so on. This map is based only on how well they survive low winter temperatures; a gross oversimplification. For example, are plants affected more by a single extremely low temperature night, or is the number of days of frost (the duration of winter) more important? In fact both are important, but the statistic for the map only relates directly to the former. Moreover, plants will survive in an area for some time, but a rare catastrophic cold snap will kill them. Some risk evaluation - the probability of getting a particularly severe low temperature - often would be more useful rather than just the average conditions.

You are in Australia Zone 4. Because of the warmer seaboard, covers a broad area from coastal Queensland across to Shark Bay and Geraldton in the west, and includes the Mornington Peninsula, areas adjacent to Spencer Gulf and Adelaide, the south western coastal zone, Sydney and the north coast of NSW, along with a number of localities dotted all around the southern coast of the continent.%26quot;

My summary: You are on the outer limit of what Lily of the Valley will live in. You might be able to get it to grow, however you must have shade, the plant will not tolerate the heat in your area very well. Try it! Buy 2 to 4 plants, and try them at the most shady spots in your yard. I just bought 12 LOV from Springhill Nursery in USA for 32.94 (US dollars) including shipping.

Tryiing to identify a type of worm I found on my lily of the valley plant. about 1-2 inches, creme colored ?
wiggilly worm
Reply:The absolute best way to identify it is to take it to your local nursery, not one of the big chains because they usually do not have enough people working to help you. Your local nursery and garden store will have experts that will already be familiar with that worm, and how to get rid of it, if it is a nuisance.

Why did my planted potted lily of the valley stall out?

I bought some LOV pips from Home Depot, half of which looked kinda dried out but i gave them all a chance in a pot anyway. One of the pips took off and i have a one inch shoot (really more of a curled in leaf) that came up pretty quickly. Problem is, it hasn%26#039;t done anything since then, and its been almost 2 weeks! Why did this little guy stop growing, and how can i get him going again? And is there anything i can do for the other pips that haven%26#039;t come up at all? I potted in Miracle Grow potting mix and have them on a shaded window. Thanks!

Why did my planted potted lily of the valley stall out?
Has the temperature changed a great deal in the area of the country you are in. More importantly is the plant seeing constant warmth and sun?

Also you might want to consider that the plant isn%26#039;t necessarily growing upward, but it might be doing a whole bunch under the soil. Since plant roots are what feed it, maybe the plant is focusing its energy making sure it can sustain future grown by building its root system.

Is it possible to buy lily-of-the valley seed in NY?

Lily of the Valley is sold as rhizomes, underground stems which send out stolons. I don%26#039;t know if they produce new plants only in this manner, but I%26#039;ve never seen seed for them.

Is it possible to buy lily-of-the valley seed in NY?
I would get a 3 pack at a nursery, and wait 3 years, and you will have a lot of them. I%26#039;d give you some, if you were my neighbor. They do spread really fast once they are established.
Reply:I%26#039;ve never seen Lily of the Valley seeds for sale. This is an easily found plant that spreads somewhat quickly on it%26#039;s own. You probably have a neighbor, relative or friend who has it. I%26#039;m sure they would share and you will have some to share yourself fairly quickly.

If you don%26#039;t know anyone who has it, you can probably get it for under $5 at a local garden center.

Can Foxglove/Digitalis, Marigold, and Lily of the Valley survive a Midwest winter potted outside?

Foxglove is a biennial and it might come back next year- but through its seeds Marigold will not come back. Lily of the Valley is a perennial and might come back next year- depends on how long the roots are frozen for. Your best bet is planting the Lily of the Valley in the ground and the foxglove in the ground for the best chances of them coming back.

Can Foxglove/Digitalis, Marigold, and Lily of the Valley survive a Midwest winter potted outside?
They won%26#039;t survive in pots, but you could try bringing the pots inside or planting them. Lily of the Valley is very hardy.

Marigold is an annual and when it is done, it%26#039;s done.
Reply:Not likely in the upper midwest. Marigold may %26quot;volunteer%26quot; from seeds next year. Digitalis and lily of the valley would probably make it if the plants were in the ground instead of in pots.

Can belladonna delphinium, foxglove, and lily-of-the-valley each grow in individual pots?

I%26#039;d like to plant a pot of each of these on my balcony. Will they grow well if the pot is big enough?

Can belladonna delphinium, foxglove, and lily-of-the-valley each grow in individual pots?
In keeping this in mind that you want this on your balcony; foxglove is very toxic to animals and children, so I highly advise that you snip that plant in the bud, so to speak, that and it can not be planted in a planter for it grows rather tall and spreads like nothing you have ever seen.

On the other hand, belladonna delphinium, and depending on which type you choose, can be planted inside of a planter (link below). As for L.O.V., yes you can grow that in a planter, but keeping in mind that it needs shade, but never fear so does the belladonna :-)

I hope that this has helped you out hun and I bet that it will look great with those 2 plants..

Remember: Foxglove is VERY TOXIC to animals and small children as well !!!!!
Reply:Sure they will. Both the delphinium and foxglove get very tall, so be prepared.
Reply:they need deep pots has they grow pretty tall , except for lily of the valley they can cope being in middle sized pots as they font grow tall they are crawlers don%26#039;t forget the delphiniums and foxgloves need bamboo sticks for them to grow straight or they will bend over so tire them very loosely on the sticks.

Where can i find lily of the valley plants (bulbs) i dont see them in catalogs or stores?

You might try Lowe%26#039;s if you have one in your area. I saw Lilly of the Valley bulbs there recently.

I have also seen them online at Michigan Bulb and Spring Hill Nursery.

Hope this helps.

Where can i find lily of the valley plants (bulbs) i dont see them in catalogs or stores?
Convallaria or Lily of the Valley are started from creeping horizontal rhizomes and planted in early winter. In my neighbourhood Lily of the Valley plants are sold at the annual plant sale in the spring to raise funds. Maybe you can look out for these sales in your paper or contact garden clubs. Be sure to plant Lily of the Valley in rich soil full of humus in shade.
Reply:I don%26#039;t think you will find them until spring. The reason a lot of stores don%26#039;t carry lotv bulbs is because they are easy to divide and they spread rapidly, ask your neighbors if they have some, dig up a clump, and plant them in a little shade with reliable moisture. The leaves will burn in full sun.
Reply:Any local florist should be able to locate and special order these bulbs for you. If they would rather not they should be able to refer you to a floral distributor. Also searching online might be helpful.
Reply:Try Vesey%26#039;s Seeds. Their website is www.veseys.com and they will ship to Canada and the US. I get most of my bulbs from them and they%26#039;re very good quality. I%26#039;ve also seen lily of the valley bulbs in their print catalogues, both the white and pink varieties.

Transplant lily of the valley?

our neighbor has some and offered to allow me to dig them up so i may have some. but i dont know anything about these. what do i look for to dig up, is it a simple bulb?

Transplant lily of the valley?
Lily of the Valley %26quot;bulbs%26quot; are called pips. They are small, white, bulb like things. Look at where the leaves come up out of the ground, put the shovel in about 4 inches away from the leaves and lift the soil. The pips should be about 4-6%26quot; below the surface. When you lift the soil you will see the pips attached to the leaves. Loosen the dirt and gather some of the pips with leaves attached, dig a hole about 4-6%26quot; deep where you want to plant them, stick them in the ground, cover and water.

Characteristics:

Height - 6 in.

Time of bloom - Early spring

If they don%26#039;t stock it, there%26#039;s probably a good reason.

Are lily of the valley flowers poison for animals?

Every part of the plant is poisonous because it contains about 20 poisonous glycosides such as convalatoxin, convalarin, and convalamarin, as well as saponins. They cause poisoning characterized by strong headache, nausea and vomiting, slow pulse and excessive urination. The victims are often domesticated animals.

Are Lily of the Valley shade or sun plants?

I love lily of the valley because I think of my Grandma Florence and my Aunt Ann%26#039;s very massive beds, each surrounding a window with a south view. However, each did have some shade trees in the area.

I planted my starts when these ladies were both very much alive. Twenty nine years later, they are memories, but when the fragrance permeates the May air, their memories are very much alive. My lily of the valley are on a hillside, (overlooking the Hurricane creek valley), on the west edge of a grove of trees. All of these locations, which have produced lush, vigorously blooming lily of the valley beds, are part shade, with a time of sun.

However, I was given a start that I wanted to keep separate for sentimental reasons. A couple years ago, I planted that right in the heart of the trees. They had wonderful blooms this year, and are still blooming today!

They don%26#039;t mind full shade at all. I think perhaps because they are finished blooming by the time the leaves are fully out, they do receive sun, even in shade. My hostas do well in shade too, and don%26#039;t mind being surrounded by the lily of the valley.

You should also know that later in the summer the lilly of the valley%26#039;s leaves do die back. For several years, I thought it was due to drought, but even in wet years the leaves fade and partially collapse as summer wanes. No problem, they%26#039;ll return.

No matter what you plant, you are refreshing the air. So plant trees, plant shrubs, plant flowers, even houseplants. Your lungs will thank you for the boost of fresh air!

Perennial Lily of the Valley also called Convallaria Majalis is one of the best and easiest perennials to grow as a ground cover. This old time favorite has a pleasant smell and beautiful tiny bell-shaped flowers that will spread quickly.
Reply:was told by local nursery: If it Flowers it needs a certian amount of sunlight....
Reply:shade
Reply:Definately shade....can tolerate some dappled shade for no more than a few hours a day.
Reply:I have it growing in 2 places in my yard, total shade (under a fir tree) and alongside the house in total sun and it flowers in each place. Lilies of the Valley tend to be invasive and spread quickly so don%26#039;t plant unless you want them to spread.
Reply:almost total shade. They are great planted under a tree or in a woodland type setting. very natural look. They would be nice planted with other shade lovers. They bloom early and for only a short time. Good luck.

When it says Jesus is the lily of the valley ......?

Is this from the Bible or is this only from poetry and songs of adoration? What does this mean to you?

When it says Jesus is the lily of the valley ......?
No...

The %26quot;Rose of Sharon and Lily of the valley%26quot; come from the Song of Songs.

It is the Ethiopean(?) princess who was the beloved of Solomon that called herself the lily of the valley in the biblical love poem.

It is attached to Jesus by worship song writers... although why a title of an African woman is given to Jesus, I would not know...
Reply:From the Song....! [see links below]

The Words and Music....are on the first link! Most churches.... do not sing the Old Hyms of the FAITH...!

The use the New... %26quot;7-11%26quot;... music [ ? ] You know.... 7 words....11 times.... without any meaning or thought!

Thanks for Asking ! In Christ Jesus.... Roger R.
Reply:Sort of --- it%26#039;s from the Song of Solomon, which most Christians think pertains not only to earthly marriage but also to the heavenly marriage of Jesus and His bride, the Church.

Song 2:1,6-8,16 (NIV) I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys... O that his left hand were under my head, and that his right hand embraced me! I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or the wild does: do not stir up or awaken love until it is ready! The voice of my beloved! Look, he comes, leaping upon the mountains, bounding over the hills... My lover is mine and I am his; he browses among the lilies.

However, since it is clearly speaking about the wife in this context, I think it would be more accurate to say that it%26#039;s the church rather than Jesus at least if you want to know what it represents in Scripture.

Can anyone recommend a fertilizer for lily of the valley?

Mine are planted all around the base of a birch tree. There were already there when I bought my house %26gt;10 years ago. Over time then are thinning and not blooming as well as they used to. Any advise or ideas appreciated.

Can anyone recommend a fertilizer for lily of the valley?
weed and feed
Reply:Sounds like the birch may be shading or its roots may be taking more of the moisture up. After 10 years the tree will grow larger and more shade is produced. You could try digging up the lily of the valley and separating the pips (fleshy roots) and replanting. I think an all purpose fertilizer, bone meal or bulb booster would work for fertilizer. If you dig up, add this to the soil before you replant. The time to fertilize is fall, but you could get away with an organic fertilizer or compost anytime. When you dig the pips be sure to replant them as soon as possible.
Reply:organic mulch
Reply:you must make a soil analysis first so that you can buy the right fertilizer. there is a kit for that. youcan buy it in your local garden shops

Anyone taken herbal "Lily of the Valley root" and your reaction?

A guy at a health food store recommended it to me. The research I%26#039;ve done online is mixed, good and bad. It%26#039;s ground powder in capsule form. Anyone taken it or know much about it?

Anyone taken herbal %26quot;Lily of the Valley root%26quot; and your reaction?
the leaves of the lily of the valley plant are poisonous. however, we are talking about extract from the root of lily of the valley. this is not poisonous at all. it is similar to the heart medication known as Digitalis in its effect. it will slow and strengthen the contractions of your heart a little bit. it is very helpful in valvular heart disease. Digitalis can become toxic in high doses, but my understanding is that this is not a concern with lily of the valley if not taken in excess. it is also a mild diuretic and can be helpful with weight loss. my mother has recently begun taking it and reports a boost in her energy level and several pounds lost weight.

Lily of the valley - planting and growing tips?

first off, i bought some bulbs (seeds?) and they look really dry and like fat hollow straw strands. is this normal? i had no i dea what i was doing, i just remember my grandma used to have them when i was a kid and i thought they looked beautiful. should i cut off those straw-like tips? that%26#039;s how they came in the bag from the store. they look kind of ugly right now. have i bought something already dead? hah. if this is normal, how long should i expect to wait until i see anything change? should i water every day? less often?

Lily of the valley - planting and growing tips?
You may have bought duds. Lilly of the valley is a spring flower, with the blooming happening at the same time as lilacs (I have both).

Lily of the valley is best transplanted in the fall. When first unearthed you will see small bulbs attached to hairy root systems. The dead looking stalks you talk about is what is leftover of their previous tops.

Try planting these now (I sure hope they haven%26#039;t dried out too much), about an inch into the soil, with those hard little stalks sticking straight up. Group them fairly tightly together (in a diamond pattern about 2 inches apart). If they survive and start multiplying they will do this by division of the bulb itself, and the areas beside each will fill in fairly quickly.

Also lily of the valley really likes shady areas...some sun is okay, but it should be planted in an area that is in shade for the afternoon. And they like moist soils, so enriching the soil underneath the bulbs with a good 4 inches of mulch will help feed them and keep them healthy for years.

Finally, please remember that lily of the valley IS poisonous. Make sure your kids and pets don%26#039;t try to chew at them.

Reply:Must have bought them from an idiot mart, er...mass-merchandizer? Those came to the store in mid-Feb, %26amp; should have been potted or planted by April . They are probably dead, or severely weakened . The %26quot;straw%26quot; is from the plants starting to grow, %26amp; then drying out . Take them back %26amp; get a refund . If you want L-o-t-V, walk around , %26amp; look for someone with a lot of them . Ask to buy some . He/she will probably just give them to you . In any event you will get a better deal . If all else fails, buy some plants from a local garden center, or pips from a reputable mail-order/online plant company . ( NOTTTTT!!!! Michigan Bulb Co., or Springhill Nursery - small crap, almost as bad as where you got the ones you have.) I%26#039;ll look for some good sources . Back in a bit.;D

Reply:They don%26#039;t like to be planted too deeply, %26amp; they love shade.

They prefer cool, moist, acidic soils

Plant 1-2%26quot; below soil level. They%26#039;re usually planted in the spring when the ground warms to about 50 degrees.

Once established, they%26#039;ll grow rapidly %26amp; will need to be divided in spring or fall. Each division should have at least one “pip”- a pinkish-white growing tip that looks like the eye of an Irish potato. Add plenty of organic material to the planting area- compost or leaf mold both work well. After planting, the pips should be one inch below the soil surface. A one to two inch mulch of shredded leaves or pine straw should be added after planting to conserve soil moisture and to keep the soil cool. Top dress with a new layer of organic material each fall, and then cover the planting with a new layer of mulch.

I had the same problem when I bought my rhizomes fro WalMart. They never came up. I planted them in good potting soil mixed with peat moss. I took extra care to provide them with the best growing conditions, but nothing happened.

You%26#039;ll have to go back to the store to get a refund. I%26#039;m actually contemplating going to a garden center to buy one that%26#039;s already growing. Once you get one that%26#039;s growing, they easily increase.

Sorry that you got such a bum deal.

Good luck on your next try at growing them!
Reply:Lily of the valley%26#039;s month to bloom is May, I%26#039;d suggest planting them in total shade, they thrive well under a tree, the look that you have described just sounds like they are in hibernation, don%26#039;t take them apart. Remember, these plants spread, if you place them around a tree, make a small hedge around it with stones to contain them. They%26#039;ll be beautiful next spring!

Lily of the Valley in pots?

I%26#039;ve researched %26quot;answers%26quot;, but didn%26#039;t find what I was looking for. Due to a physical problem, I had to plant my lilies of the valley in pots; and according to the Wayside Gardens website, pots are acceptable. Do I have to bring them in the garage or the basement for winter?

Lily of the Valley in pots?
Depending on your gardening zone, it might not hurt to bring them into an unheated garage and put them back outside in the spring. Give them a drink every couple of weeks to keep them from drying out.

Reply:Lily of the Valley don%26#039;t do well in mild climates, they need a winter chill, so leaving them in an unheated garage will work. I always keep some in pots as well but I do it so I can force them into bloom in mid winter with Amaryllis, crocus and daffodils. RScott

Can lily of the valley be container grown in zone 5? If so, how and when to plant them?

I want to grow lily of the valley because of their beautiful scent. My mom grew them though and she said they became quite invasive. I bought a house 10 years ago with several invasive plants that it took me years to get rid of so I definitely don%26#039;t want to go down that road again. I%26#039;m wondering if they can be container grown and if so, when should they be planted? Thanks!

Portland too warm for lily of the valley?

I wanted to plant lily of the valley in a little used portion of my yard for an easy low maintenance ground cover, because I have heard lily of the valley are tough.

However, when I went to the nursery to get some, the lady said that while we can grow lily of the valley here, it is actually a little too warm here in Portland Oregon for them, so they are a high maintenance plant here, not a low maitenance plant. She said they take a lot of care when things warm up.

Is this true?

Portland too warm for lily of the valley?
I can%26#039;t speak for the temperatures because I have had them grow successfully here in New York (LI) but always in a damp, fairly shady area. So if you are thinking of planting them in full sun that may not work.

Lily of the Valley for weed control?

I have a terraced section that I never go in, but i have to weed it anyway. Will lily of the valley keep out weeds if I plant it?

Also, it has to share the terraced level with Irises. The Irises take up half the section. If I put up a root barrier will it keep the Lily of the Valley from smothering my Irises?

Lily of the Valley for weed control?
Lily of the Valley will probably take over the entire area once it%26#039;s established. We had a small 4 x 5 bed of it under a cherry tree, and I never had to pull weeds from the area. Just remember that it can be fairly invasive and may spread beyond the flower bed. (Lily of the valley spreads from underground root nodes, and will grow out into lawn areas and between paving bricks).
Reply:those lily shouldnt drown out irises. they are pretty aggressive and have thick roots. they should live in harmony. if you want them to.

It%26#039;s actually a sourwood tree but many have started calling it the Lily of the Valley tree because of the way it looks when blooming.
Reply:Yes. There is no such beast. Lily-of-the Valley is a perennial adapted to shade and a flower, not shrub, not tree.

There are many trees which have %26quot;flowers%26quot; similar to the LOTV, however, they are not the same plant or family. The plant you are looking for is a specimen and of great interest. It is a Sorrel. Beautiful and compact tree.

Go to your library and ask for Wyman%26#039;s Garden Encly. Look up Lilly of the Valley and confirm this. As an aside, do not purchase a plant or tree from a website unless you know their reputation!! Find a Nursery, not a box-store, that deals with Full-Time Landscape Contractors for the plants that grow in your area.

Lily of the valley?

can you plant lily of the valley in a pot without it harming the plant?

Lily of the valley?
Sure. And it forces nicely for winter bloom. In areas where it will grow outdoors, Lily of the Valley%26#039;s a tough plant to kill. In fact, it usually wants to take over.

One thing to know about LOV, though, if you%26#039;re planting it in pots around little kids or pets that like to browse on potted plants -- it%26#039;s fairly toxic, due to a couple of cardiac glycosides, producing something like a heart attack.

Lily of the valley?
No the sooner you get them in the better. :-) Even if they don%26#039;t flower this spring you%26#039;ll still gain from the growth they get the following year.
